HUNT: Cedar - Whitetail Deer

Cedar stalked through the forest, her new hunting partner, Shadow, not too far from her.  Inwardly, she cursed the male for putting them in this situation, where they had to pay a debt to a cougar, a debt she wasn't sure they would be able to pay. A deer was difficult prey for even five healthy hunters, let alone two lone wolves, who were struggling to feed themselves. She sighed, keeping herself hidden in the darkness and the underbrush.

She perked up when she caught the scent of a doe. It was a healthy, strong-smelling doe, well within her prime. This wasn't Cedar's preference at all. Ideally, they'd find a small, weak, sick deer, already injured to give the wolves an advantage, but it was hard to find any prey out here, and they were pressed for time thanks to that cat.

Cedar followed its trail, keeping herself hidden, out of sight and out of scent, until she spotted the doe in a clearing, pawing the snow under a small tree. She was huge, easily one of the biggest whitetail does Cedar had ever seen. Her heart raced, just thinking about her target and the risk she was about to take. She didn't want to, but she didn't know if they'd find anything else for the rest of the night, and they needed to catch something by morning. If they didn't, she didn't want to think about what would happen then.

Shadow grew bothered by Cedar because she blamed him for inputting them in this situation when she the one who wanted to hunt at that very moment. To him, the deer wasn't even worth the trouble. He felt like he was throw under the bus for trying to compromise instead of fighting since they were pretty much weak. He prevented Cedar and himself from getting killed and eaten alive by a cougar. He like to see Cedar try to look on the bright side instead of looking for the bad result.

He followed her even though in his head he thought of what if he could sacifice Cedar to the cougar and let the cougar eat her instead because he was getting desperate. He wanted out of his situation, but he knew that he would never do something like that. Even when they hated each other, he knew he couldn't do that to his own kind.

Shadow was so into his head that he didn't even realize that he followed her all the way to a doe. He snapped out of his thoughts and hidden himself in the bushes with Cedar. Focused on the task, he tried to think of a way he could do a drive by the doe before it could runaway. Finally, he asked Cedar in a hush whisper, "What do we do?"

Still in the bushes and watching the large doe, Cedar's ear twitched when Shadow whispered to her. "What do we do?" he asked softly, his attention too focused on the deer. You tell me, you're the one who got us into this mess, she thought, but it was no use trying to say anything. There were more important things to worry about, like whether or not she'd live to see the sun again. She was quiet and thoughtful for a moment. It was hard to come up with much of a decent strategy with only two wolves to work with, especially when faced against a monster of a doe like that... they were lucky it wasn't a buck, otherwise they might as well give up now.

"I suppose we'll just have to run for it," Cedar started, voice low and just barely audible enough for Shadow to hear her. "We'll chase it and wear it down... bite at its flanks, its ankles, whatever. It'll take a while but if we're lucky and persistent, we should be able to tire it out." She glanced over to the black wolf for a moment, then she sprinted for the deer.

It bolted off and Cedar chased after it.

"Run for it? We'll chase it away." He complained quietly, nevertheless Shadow dashed after his female hunting partner as she followed the doe. The deer wasn't giving up without a fight as she rushed through the timber. His field of vision concentrated on the victim.

She hadn't even heard Shadow's muttered complaint, she was already off after the deer. She was quick, but despite that, was still far behind the doe. But that was fine, sooner or later, it'd slow down and tire out. Sooner or later, Cedar would reach it. She knew she would, with her swift speed and impeccable stamina.

The raven wolf's chest felt tight like someone was gripping it into their hands so hard it could jump out of his chest, but he couldn't give in to the idea of stopping and catching his breath. He needed to continue chasing after the doe. He hoped that the deer would slow down soon because it was getting pretty late as it was and he couldn't see crap in the dark with his bad eye. The deer pushed forward still, unbreaking her pace between the trees. Cedar was still faster than him in all this. He admired her eternal energy to pursue the deer, but he still didn't care for females all that much. He tolerated her, he didn't hate or like her.

Despite the snow making it harder to run, Cedar picked up speed, slowly gaining on the deer, but still too far to reach. She glanced behind her for a brief moment, it looked like Shadow was struggling to keep up, even if he was gaining speed too, but still not enough. She hoped she'd be able to reach the doe soon. If she could manage to get to it and wear it down, then he should be able to catch up. She knew she could use his strength when the time came.

Shadow tries hard to run as fast as he can, but the deer was fast like Sonic the hedgehog, his lover and rival in another world. It almost seem impossible to keep trying, nevertheless the male wolf never gave up like Naruto. 'Believe it,' he said in his head to encourage himself.

Cedar ran, her pace now steady. She trailed after the deer, never letting it out of her sight for even a second, even if the chase was beginning to feel dull and pointless. She wondered if she'd ever come near the deer, if she'd be able to catch it, if she'd be able to taste it... she wondered if she'd even get the chance to, the cougar might take it before the wolves would be able to enjoy their success, if they succeeded.

Shadow kept running after the deer with Cedar, feeling wore out and tired. He was so close to giving up by now, but they all knew this was a test of their strength. He was fed up with this endless running. He could almost taste the doe on his tongue.
